Yes the girls are teething, so to make things easier for other parents who are going through or coming upto the teething stage I have put together this short guide to cutting the pain down for the babies and also to enable yourselves to get a good nights sleep!
What is Teething
Quite simply teething is when a babies teeth start coming through their gums, anyone who has ever had wisdom teeth come through know exactly how it feels, for those who haven't had wisdom teeth it feels like a severe burning sensation in the mouth and also it hurts when you eat (and sometimes drink), just think how the baby feels - we can deal with the pain but the babies cannot deal with it and they usually cry and scream until the pain subsides
When do babies start teething?
Teething can start at any time after 4 months but it usually happens between the fourth and 7th month, Chloe and Shannon both started at 8 months but if you took the two months prematurity off then they would only be six months old. The first teeth are usually the two front bottom teeth and then soon after they have come through the front top two teeth will start to appear.
Okay to try to get the pain under control you can try the following things:
1.) Don't let the baby slaver and drool on their face, wipe it off this will help stop any rashes developing.
2.) Find your baby a hard toy to chew on, such as teething toy which can be filled with water and chilled in the fridge - never put these toys in the freezer though!
3.) If the baby is feeling irritable in the evening because of the teething then try giving them a dose of Calpol (USA readers please see your child's doctor for advice on products if you cannot get Calpol!), this may help the baby settle and hopefully sleep!
4.) When feeding the babies we have found that they try to bite the spoon, try not to pull the spoon out too soon because you may catch one of the teeth and your baby may refuse the rest of the food.
When the babies teeth have come through take extra time to rub baby toothpaste on the gums and around the teeth, this will make sure that the babies teeth grow and that no tooth decay happens early on.
